Golden moment

It is a winter Sunday afternoon. I have three hours for myself during my son’s music rehearsal. It is cold and heavy cloudy cover most of the sky. My heart longs for a warm place, maybe a corner with sunshine, or maybe a cup of hot tea. But where can I find it? I have no idea.

After drop off my son to his music class, I drive aimlessly. At each traffic cross, I turn or drive straight randomly. And my intuition brings me toward Burlington Bay. I park my car in the city center and walk along the lake to the Café. Chilly winter wind blows from the frozen lake. Under the heavy cloudy, Adirondack Mountains looks like a smear of shadow lying on the horizon. I am the only person on the sidewalk. I tighten my jacket and quicken my pace, trying to ignore the pebbles in my shoes.

The Cafe is almost empty. The tea I have is called “wild sweet flavor”. It has bright yellow color and orange flavor. I hold the tea with my cold hands and close my eyes, letting the warm and sweet air work on my frozen chin. Slowly, I feel the world warm up and light up. Gray merges into orange and shadow replaces by brightness. Am I holding a cup of magic tea? I open my eyes and immediately am astonished by the scene in front of me: the whole Cafe is totally flooded with golden sunshines. Just at this moment, the sun comes out of heavy clouds and pours its golden strings onto the whole lake, turn the cafe into a golden palace. All these golden elements, light, color and smell merge into the sweetest winter afternoon moment. And my pen can’t wait to catch them in my journal. Words, carrying the sunshine, chasing the smell, catching the color, are trying to find their spots on the paper. They jump between lines, bounce on my pen, and slip on the paper…

Two old ladies sit near me. One has vision problem, while the other is reading a book for her. We all are showered in the sunshine. The lady’s voice is sweat and gentle, like a soft finger gently stroking the string of the listener. Slowly, smiles bloom on their faces and unwrinkled the track of their age. They are enchanted by this golden moment too. When I write down this word, they leave arm in arm. They have a wonderful time on this winter afternoon and will never know this moment is caught in my journal.

One after another, more people come---young people with partners, family with happy kids… Everyone merge into the golden sunshine and this beautiful picture is captured by them, people who care and love the life. I wish you, too, enjoy the moment.
