7:55am, the first bell rang; 8:00am, the second bell rang. Living next door to local element school, the school bell became the clock of my life. 7:55am, left home; 8:00am, reached the newspaper stand in front of my office building.
I always biked to work, not because I wanted to fight Global warming, which I do wish to do, but because bike is the most popular transportation vehicle in Chinese cities for distance less than 10 miles. It was a sunny spring morning, and at 7:55am, I left my home. All these familiar things along the road looked lovely under the morning sunshine. I started to think about my weekend plan until a small boy jumped into my sight. He was about 8 years old, running with a big back bag pumping with his hasty pace. His white T shirt had been messed by dirt and sweat. A red scarf was tightly grabbed in one hand while the other hand was busying wiping the tears and sweat from his face. He was still half mile away from school; he couldn’t catch the second bell in three minutes even he was Carl Lewis.
I stopped in front of him and said, “come on, let me give you a ride to school.” He hesitated about half a second and jumped to my bike. I helped him settled into the back sit usually used by my son, and started to bike as fast as I can. Now, we were faster than Carl Lewis; the trees and people just flashed back like movie screens. The second bell ringed when we were in front of the school gate. He jumped off the bike, dished to the gate and slipped between the closing gate. No time to watch back, he didn't caught the smile on my face, the brightest smile I can remember. For the following whole day, I had the smile on my face and sunshine in my heart.
7:55am, the first bell rang, I left home. It happened several years until I moved to USA. I can still remember many faces of students on that road to school. But I never saw this boy again, probably because I never knew his face under the mixed tears and dust. But I do wish he has good time at schools and gets helps when he needs on his journey.
